When I picked Sebastian up at the bus stop yesterday, he was holding a big butterfly pen in his hand. When I asked him where he got it, he immediately clammed up and just said that he thought I should take it. Eventually, he told me that he had sneaked it from the library. Since Wednesday is library day, I just assumed he grabbed it from the librarian’s counter or desk. I told him that we would take it back tomorrow and he would have to apologize to the librarian.
When we got to school this morning, I realized that it wasn’t some grubby old pen, but one that was for sale as part of the book fair. He gave it back to the librarian, told that he had taken it yesterday and that he was very sorry. She gave him "the look" and then asked him if he knew that it was wrong to take things from a store. When he said yes, she thanked him for being honest and bringing the pen back. She also said that everybody makes mistakes sometimes but it is very important that they are honest and say that they are sorry.
So, while it was rough on him to go in there and admit what he did, it could have been a lot worse. I’m just glad she was pretty understanding about the whole thing.
The hubby and I were talking about it afterwards and came to realize a few things. When I saw the bucket full of pens, there were other ones with things like lizards and such that he normally would have preferred. As the hubby and I were talking it out this morning, we realized that he had probably taken it because it was a butterfly. Butterflies were one of Grandma Ski’s favorite things and we always tried to bring her a little something with butterflies on it whenever we would visit her in the nursing home. Since she has died, whenever he sees something with a butterfly, Seb always comments on how much Grandma would have liked it. Butterflies have come to be very special to us.
Also, money has been very tight since we moved here. And since hubby lost his job two weeks ago, Seb knows that money is tighter than ever. I’m sure he figured if he asked for it, we would have said we don’t have the extra money for something like that and so he didn’t even bother to ask. Not that that makes what he did right, but I can kind of see the reasoning behind it now.
He just wanted something cool that reminded him of his grandma. We talked to him last night about how stealing is wrong, and we’ll talk to him some more when he gets home. But man. This parenting stuff is hard.
